The ancient city of Jerusalem surrendered this week to Allied forces commanded by Gen. Allen. Turks had held it for 673 years, aided by Germans for three years, with destruction avoided by the retreating Germans.

Mr Rob ert Crutch Retd and Miss Ada Dell Crandall wed November 24 at the Methodint par sonage in Marchinsville Gb and now reside at 10 Main near the new high School building. Crutchfield is local manager for the Spurrier acumber Co and has many friends in Shamrock.
Mrs Mary Margaret Stuck born June 24 1860 in Washington County Indiana died December 7 1917 at Walnut Prairie. She married John Stuck April 3 1873 and lived in Clark County. Active in multiple churches she cared for two orphans and a niece adopted at sixteen months. Funeral was at West Union Baptist Church December 9 conducted by Elder T J Wheeler with burial at Bailiff Cemetery.
A Friday night blaze in Paris destroyed or heavily damaged five business buildings including James Fisher’s novelty store. Fisher suffered about 15000 in stock loss with only 2000 insured. The Landis music store Headley Forcum Rambo meat market and the Daily Gazette office were also badly damaged. Firemen faced water shortages during the blaze. Buildings belonged to Philip Bibo Samuel Sholem and Shoaff Bros.
The government reports no December volunteers, but the advisory draft age rule allows men 18 to 31 to enlist. Wayne Ticheror of Witfield, Edward Kelogetas, and Robert Wilhisdy of nearby towns enlist or resign posts. Clark and Mindley accompany recruits. Several enlist at Terre Haute and Jefferson Barracks. Ralph Cooper of Martinsville enlists in the aviation service.

Dr Stephen Bradley received forty dollars for the association, and a basketball schedule lists games from January to February at various towns. Miss Ralston visited Danville high and domestic science classes are large.
Thirteen soldiers of the 24th OS Infantry were sentenced by a San Antonio court martial to be hanged for the riot in Houston last August. Forty-one others received life imprisonment.
The Cumberland county special election endorsed issuing bonds to improve the National Road by 635 votes. Supporters celebrate while Fayette County defeated a similar proposal, but organizers plan another election push.
Godfrey Spittler born 1835 in Alsace Germany died December 8 1917 at his home in Andersen township aged 82 years 11 months He came to America in 1852 and settled in Clark County He married Mary Detrich January 18 1866 who died February 10 1916 Survivors include eight children Funeral services were held yesterday with Reverends Sterlamm and Craig delivering sermons.
D Cleaver a well known citizen of Auburn township died at his home Monday afternoon aged 63 after a long illness from Brizat disease. Funeral services will be held today at Auburn conducted by Rev L Facig. He was a progressive farmer and active in public affairs and is survived by his wife and two children. He had earlier contributed to the Herald from Homer for many years.
Navy ordnance and equipment officials report a shortage of field spectacles and telescopes. The Navy will keep a record of glasses and return them to owners with one dollar for their use. Send glasses to Secor Cunningham, State Council of Defense, 5th Floor, 12th Adams St, Chicago.
Mrs James Hood died Friday at her home in Anderson township after a long cancer illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at Grace Chapel conducted by Rev J Craig. She was 62 and survived by her husband and six children. Masonc Notice regular meeting tonight at 7:30 with annual election and patriotic program. Music by the Masonic Quintette. Mrs. Mary Taylor, 65, was found dead at her Ashmore area farm home yesterday. Two bloody pocket knives were found nearby, indicating death by own action. The report notes life reflections and general musings without added detail.
The legal advisory board includes S M Scholfield and Wm T Hadlenbeck of Marshall and J J Arney of Casey. They will collaborate with the county exemption board. A medical advisory board will be named soon.
