Ten Chicago children visit Clark County for a county sponsored summer vacation trip stopping at Marshall and Casey. All reports indicate the youngsters are enjoying the time away. The photo shows the ten at Marshall.
Otho Tibbs was injured by a bolt thrown from a moving belt while installing an electric lighting plant for Ben T. Baird on the Ed Pinnell farm two miles south of Westfield. He sustained a broken bone and a gash, later examined in Marshall. He will walk on crutches for some time.
The Finkbiner family car crash near their home injured Abe Finkbiner’s hand and Frank Finkbiner’s leg while another son Samuel escaped serious harm. Abe remained able to work, and Frank was reported to be recovering.
Fred Keifer is at Springfield this week acting as judge in poultry classes and will give daily culling demonstrations based on the method he described in the Herald weeks ago.
A highway construction blast east of Marshall damaged two joints of the water mains, cutting off city supply and forcing residents to use wells and buckets. Officials warned water may be unavailable for 24 hours as engineers assess the damage and plan repairs. Minor accidents occurred at the Narrows on opening day with the management handling the incidents.

The Methodist church group the G L Gs held a picnic supper at Harris Springs on Friday evening. They traveled by truck and two cars. Guests included Mrs John Kelly and her young daughter Irene and Gene Taubeneck.
Gard appears before Squire Colvin on three charges brought by States Attorney Clements. After three hours of discussion the jury or court found Gard not guilty on all counts. Marshall Club to Entertain at the Pythian block on Thursday evening August 28 features Catherine Roberts of Chicago with her orchestra. Reception for members and guests, dance to follow until 1:00 a.m. Music by Roberts orchestra with Juanita Noble, Theda Andrews, K E Horst, Lloyd Nicholson and others.

John Rademaker targets ice cream plant in Black and Hutchinson’s former grocery. H. M. Dewey to add second story for showroom. Seymour Hurst to develop a residence block and extend his property. Rail work resumes on Pine Street for the national trail with Heyworth crew laying rails and unloading cars. Property transfers include multiple Marshall lots and acres with prices from 500 to 4,000 dollars.
John W. Lewis, county treasurer, fell downstairs early last Wednesday while closing windows during a storm. He suffered head and shoulder bruises and was bedbound for days, living on South Fifth Street. He walked off the stairs after misplacing his footing but is progressing well.
The Marshall free public library reports 12509 books circulated in the year ending June 30 1919 with 1832 volumes on hand and 306 added amid limited funds. 916 borrowers including 177 new, 952 books borrowed last month. Librarian Margaret Cole to leave for university. Florence Hodge to temporarily replace, new librarian appointed October 1. Also notes on magazine reading, staff changes, and a new West Union garage.
Mr and Mrs C L Parsons depart for a week long visit with E J Decker in Winchester Kentucky. On return they will stop in Indianapolis to visit H Rudy, with the Deckers well known around Marshall.
The Martinsville fair opens its gates to the public with cattle, horses, sheep, hogs, poultry, crafts, and agricultural displays. A long list of officers and committees guides the event including presidents, treasurers, secretaries, and superintendents for attractions, prizes, and facilities.

Wayne Hess 24 Martinsville weds Leona Thornton 18 Martinsville. John Gabey 32 of Darwin weds Elsie Drake 21 of Indiana.
A driver attempted to beat a train at a crossing but the race ended in a dead heat. The narrator insists the driver is notorious for taking risks, denying other claims.
Washington notes President Wilson’s recommendations may ease pain temporarily but fail to permanently reduce living costs. The piece argues Congress lacks courage and knowledge, urging drastic action beyond current reforms to save civilization and prevent economic decay. It also cites incomplete 1918 Illinois birth reports and calls physicians and families to report births accurately.
