No Women for Miles Before the Wagon Arrival
In a California mining camp tale from Senator William M. Stewart, scarce women sparked a camp furore when an emigrant wagon with a woman arrived. Miners lined four miles of coyote diggings as a clothesline and its lingerie drew crowds, while a gold dust fund of 2000 to 3000 dollars was raised for the mounted visitor, who left with the wagon arm in retreat. The next day the wagon and owner vanished, leaving no further trace.
