The August storm stormed Washington with the Pension Bureau and Judiciary Square in its center. Officials describe darkness inside the massive building as windows shattered and rain roared, while on the outside trees were torn and copper roofs ripped from structures.
Clark County Sunday School Association invites delegates to a two day convention in Westfield on September 4 and 5 1913. State workers C B Schenck and Mrs Loveland head adult and primary programs with a 30 voice choir and 20 piece orchestra led by Charles I Rider assisted by Joseph Strader. Train schedule lists Marshall Martinsville Casey and Westfield arrival times.
The annual Clark County Teachers Institute convenes at Marshall High School next Monday with sessions daily from 8 45 to 12 and 1 30 to 4 00. Instructors include G P Randle Danville city schools H W Hostetler Olney schools and B Norcross Kalamazoo normal school penmanship. Lectures cover United States History Geography Grammar and School Management Arithmetic Civics and Reading and penmanship. All prospective Clark County teachers are urged to attend each lecture. Friday’s county schools commencement exercises will be held at the Methodist church with Prof W S Booth delivering the address.
A severe rain and lightning storm struck Thursday night damaging several farms in the Walnut Prairie area. Marion Poorman’s barn was totally destroyed, Mrs. John Ridgway’s barn burned across the river, and York farms of Reese Pritchard and John Thomas lost barns and contents. Three Pixley and Harlan horses were killed while grazing under a tree on George Norris’s farm, their bodies found touching.
A pleasant surprise party was held at Harry Maurer’s country home on Aug 6 to celebrate Beulah Maurer’s 16th birthday. Over 60 guests arrived after Ruth McDonald kept the guest of honor occupied, and the evening featured games, magic, and abundant ice cream and cake with many practical presents.
William Downs of Douglas township killed a massive rattlesnake described as one of the largest seen in the country. The monster measured feet and one inch in length with three rattles. Dr C F Ganner secured the skin and is tanning it.
The notice lists Sunday School at 9 20 a m Morning service 10 45 a m and the mid week meeting at 1 80 p m with Reverend William Drew as minister.
The second annual home coming of twenty years ago was held at Spiketown last Sunday. About 9 am the gathering grew to 100 representatives with families on the old school ground. After greetings the group divided into classes for a new teaching program. A basket dinner followed on the school ground. Ben Bierbaum opened the program at 1:30 with talks by older residents. Mrs. Silas Litteral recited "Twenty Years Ago" and Miss Ethel Tingley read memories from thirty years past. School reports honored Mrs. Lyman Irwin and Sylvester Mills. solos by Chester English and Dorothy Steele. duets by the Washburn sisters and Mable Silver. recitations by Nellie Umbarger and Harold Littoral. closing song by the Mathews quartet. New attendees included Mrs. Austin Gage and Ezra Mathews of Danville and others from nearby towns.
Judge Kimbrough and his wife Mrs. Kimbrough were quietly divorced Thursday in Danville after a four year marriage begun in Colorado Springs. No charges were filed and the bride had expressed hatred for Danville upon arrival, later living in Los Angeles. Kimbrough reportedly settled a fortune on his life before the proceedings. he and his wife had known each other as sweethearts in Golconda. This was his second marriage and her third.
An August incident at a Vandalia road bridge north of the city involved a Ford touring car with three Rossville men. Speeding across loose sand and gravel, the vehicle was thrown about thirty feet and rolled twice. The occupants escaped serious injury with only bruises after the men were removed and repairs made.
Ovie Draper files for divorce from Florence Draper in circuit court. They married May 16 1910 and lived together until March 1911. He claims he was a good husband and that Florence deserted him without cause and refuses to return.
Dan Curran, formerly of Marshall and now a pension department clerk in Washington, has received a second promotion. He began at 1000 dollars, was raised to 1200, and now earns 1400. H. C. Bell is awaiting a promotion and a salary increase, with a figure around 600.
Early Monday morning fire consumed the store and residence of G. W. McNary in Auburn. The family escaped in their night clothes, two buggies saved, records of Walter McNary destroyed, and insurance covered both buildings and stock. A gas can explosion alerted the family. Nearby, Robert Garver's Martinsville house burned the same night.
The Holzworth family reunion gathered at Fred and Mrs. Holzworth’s home in Ernst on August 7 with seventy nine members present and fourteen absent. Attendees shared a bountiful noon dinner under a large canopy and enjoyed a second supper, social chat, and music. The day closed with the song God be with you till we meet again and plans for an annual reunion hosted next year by Fred Laybold Sr. and wife in Hutton Indiana.
A 10,000 barrel Leader refinery tank at Casey was struck by lightning early Thursday, burning with its contents. A cannon was used to draw off oil after the tank, more than half full, risked boiling and explosion. Spectators scattered as boiling oil sprayed. no injuries were reported. Estimated loss around $20,000.
Developments in the oil industry within the county show several wells brought in the Booth farm area near Martinsville. A well struck at 600 feet near the Booth farm has encouraged lessees who plan further drilling in the vicinity.
Next Sunday preaching services will be at the Big Creek church in the morning and at the Marshall Church corner 10th and Plant Streets in the evening. Pastor Leo J Ehrhardt invites all to attend.
Parties indebted to the Shipe Hardware Co. are urged to contact Marshall Tinning & Plumbing Co. at Locust streets to settle by cash or note.
William Edward Mills of Hennessey Oklahoma died July 30 1913 after a paralytic illness and stroke He was born in Bartholomew Indiana April 13 1849 lived in Clark Illinois before moving to Oklahoma He married Eliza Brubeck September 20 1872 and left five children His funeral was led by Rev Steel at Union Chapel with burial in Lyon Valley cemetery The family and many friends mourn the loyal neighbor and friend

A family reunion gathered seven Lutz families at the Dallas area home of Mrs. F C Lutz and daughter Hattie last Sunday. Guests included Mrs Ella Wivel and two daughters from Marshall and Bert Lutz and family from Terre Haute. The event featured a large dinner and dessert, with a group photo taken and a day described as thoroughly enjoyed and memorable.
Martin Meehan a former Asbury resident who lived with his niece in Terre Haute for five years died last Wednesday at age 80 after about two months illness. The body was brought to this city Friday for funeral services at St Marys church with interment in the parish cemetery. He is survived by his niece Miss Mary Walsh and a son Edward Meehan of Me Keen.
A Danville court scene honors Judge Scholfield for presiding over the first term in the new court house on the public square. A lawyer called the temple of justice the finest and handomest in Illinois, praising the courthouse ahead of next October opening.
Senator Sherman will headline the Crawford County Pioneer Association annual meeting to be held next Saturday at Robinson. The principal speaker is L. Sherman.
Lawrence Boyer, nineteen, formerly of Grandview near Edgar county, was struck and killed by a fast mail train near Dudley as he crossed the tracks while waiting with a brother for a Charleston-bound train. The body was thrown about 150 feet and crushed.
Mrs Rebecca Buckner a longtime West York resident born August 28 1855 in Licking County Ohio died August 8 1913 at her home. She married F E Buckner November 8 1877 and lived 33 years of happy marriage. She was devoted to home and church serving the preacher and preferring quiet companionship to society. Two brothers survive along with other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held at West York on Sunday.
