Two convicts Louis Young aged 26 and Frank Jenkins aged 40, both colored, were shot and seriously wounded when they attempted to scale a wooden barricade at the prison quarry. Guard John Tumey of Marshall, Illinois, fired after ordering them to halt as they evaded other guards.
West Union man Omer T Shawler dies at 73
Omer T Shawler of West Union died Friday morning at his suburban farm home after about a week of illness. He was 73 last January. Survived by wife Mrs Shawler and son L A Shawler, a West Union hardware dealer. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 PM at the Friends church with burial in the Friends cemetery.
