The Temperance Movement in Marion reports a strong shift in favor of reform. Past drunkenness receded as pastors preached temperance, unions held large meetings, and Mayor and Council actions curb liquor trade. Two whiskey shops closed and members join the Good Templar Lodge while efforts continue against a crafty foe.
The passage warns that love of strong drink is often hereditary and that indulgence leads to personal risk and transmitted appetite to children. It argues luxury and excess destroy nations and that habitual drinking enslaves the individual, echoing Darwin on origins while noting no lower animal drinks voluntarily.
