Several young men from Marion apply for a one month Citizens Military Training Camp at Camp Grant starting July 21. The government funds all costs including transportation meals and clothes. Ages 16 to 85 with sound character intelligence and fitness are eligible if they have had no prior military training.

Contract Let For New Concrete Highway South
Carterville township let a contract Wednesday for the construction of the concrete highway south of the city provided for in a recent bond issue. The contract was let to contractor Hamilton of Carbondale at $55,000 for the job, which will extend a little over a mile from the south end of Division street, connecting with the state road to the Crab Orchard creek bridge.

Man Hurt When Horse Throws Rider Injures Arm and Back
W. R. DeLanias of route was injured Wednesday morning while riding a horse from the field. The horse fell throwing him about twenty feet, injuring his arm and back. The horse was so severely injured it was killed.

Record Highway Construction Breaks All Previous Marks
The W. F. Smith & Co. contractor set a new record on the Springfield Eest St. Louis Federal Aid highway in Macoupin county near Carlinville by laying 1435 feet of 16 foot wide concrete road in ten hours. They used twelve cars of stone, six cars of saw and five cars of cement after a three mile haul. One locomotive hauled materials for 72 miles and twelve trains of thirty-two cars each contributed to the work. The heat was extreme and three water boys supplied drinking water. The next day over 1200 feet more were laid, totaling more than a half mile in two days. The contract is now completed.

Williamson Gets 14 Years in Deputy Slaying Case
After a 26 hour deliberation the jury found Charles Williamson guilty of murdering Deputy Sheriff Floyd Pennington at Bush on March 15. He was sentenced to 14 years in the penitentiary. Williamson fled after the shooting but was captured after a gun duel with Deputy Sheriffs and Sheriff Thaxton. The trial in Circuit Court began June 15 and concluded with the verdict on the 22nd.

Infant dies at home on Hast Boulevard
Lorene Russell infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Edgar Russell died at their Hast Boulevard home on Friday evening at 26 days old. Born May 29 she was the younger of two children. Survived by parents and a brother the family field is listed as Myrtle Adams prior to marriage. Burial was held Saturday at 11 am at McKinney Chapel.

Navy Announces Summer Schools For Boys At Two Bases
The navy will run two four to six week summer schools for boys ages 16 to 20 who pass a medical exam. Programs combine physical culture and discipline. Participants receive $33 monthly, transportation home, and uniforms. they must provide two pairs of black shoes, underclothes, socks and toilet articles.
