The Republican Leader reports upcoming installation of a Goss Comet press, arriving early February, to print from rolls at 3,600 pages per hour. The upgrade includes a new composing room saw, expanded plant space, and merger of two Marion presses to ensure delivery reliability and better reader service.
Miss Mary J L Hoover, Williamson County Home Bureau adviser, rushed from New Burnsides to attend her father Hoover’s funeral in Yellow Creek Indiana after he died suddenly in Palmyra Michigan. Survived by one son and three daughters. wife predeceased him.
M. B. Pike of Johnston City route 2 was in Marion on Wednesday and subscribed for the SHMI Weekly Leader, phone 207, for coal, S. TH. Goodall Jr, 1 19 6.
Under construction three to six houses at all times, the builder invites buyers to inspect foundations frames siding roofs ceilings paint wallpaper and overall house before completion. Prospective buyers urged to visit under Marion area to see unfinished homes and consider purchasing, with incentives.
Alexander Roland Young eight son of Mr and Mrs Roland Jessie Young died suddenly at 7 30 p m Tuesday Coroner William McCown conducted an inquest Wednesday to determine the cause He was born in Marion October 28 1912 and was eight years two months and twenty seven days old He lived with his parents and four siblings near Pillsburg Funeral services Thursday at the Arthur Huffstuiler place at 2 p m conducted by Reverend Browning with interment at Rose Hill cemetery.
Arrangements are made for Levi Ferrell 74 to be honored at a funeral Thursday at 1 p.m. near Creal Springs. Carriages meet the morning train to transport mourners to the old homestead. Rev Julian Atwood of Marion will officiate. Ferrell died Tuesday while feeding stock. coroner’s jury cites old age and general debility.
Mrs F C Nichols was granted a divorce from her husband in city court this week. She received alimony of 100 dollars per month. Dr B E Woodside made a business trip to Benton Tuesday.
The Front Rank Bible Class at the Christian church held a Tuesday social drawing about seventy five attendees despite bad weather. Games, stories, recitations and races provided two hours of lively entertainment with coffee and sandwiches served. Organizers led by W. G. Metsinger and others planned monthly socials as the class grows in membership.
A large crowd gathered at the home of Mr. Alex Wheeler in Spillertown on Sunday to celebrate his 38th birthday with baskets and abundant food. Attendees included numerous family members and friends such as Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Monk, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Angel, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cox, Rev. Moody Clarida, Mrs. A. J. Wheeler, Mrs. Lizzie Angel, andZona Jackson among others.
Mrs Hartwell hosted the Presbyterian Woman's Missionary Society meeting at Thorn Place. Mrs M B Hartwell spoke on China missions, noting hundreds of Presbyterian missionaries there aiding famine relief, housing a thousand children in Poakinfu, and funds being raised locally. Refreshments followed and the February business meeting will be at Mrs Henry Bantz's home.
John Alexander longtime Sunnyside School teacher of Herrin and a native of Johnson County died Wednesday at 11 45 a m in Murphysboro after a period of illness from pneumonia. He was born October 4 1861 in Johnson County and was married to Nannie Vaught 31 years ago. Surviving are four children Delphus Otis May and Mamie. brothers James of Herrin and Giddie of Seattle. Funeral Friday at 2 p m at the Presbyterian church with interment Maplewood cemetery.
A state school of instruction for Royal Arch Masons is held at Jerrin. Grand High Priest Judge A. D. Webb of Mt. Vernon will attend Wednesday night to confer the past and most excellent master degree. Several from Marion are attending.
The Woodman Circle held an officer installation Tuesday evening at their hall with a large crowd. Nellie Saul of Crab Orchard and W. R. Weisgerber of Herrin received a marriage license and were married by Rev H T Abbott at the Baptist parsonage in Murphysboro at 6 pm. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs B J Saul, wore a blue suit and hat. Weisgerber, a miner and longtime Freewill Baptist member from Johnston City, will reside with his bride at 201 South Sixteenth street Herrin. The couple's ceremony was witnessed by Mrs J C Glenn and Mrs J M Griffin.
Government figures show nearly three and a half million fewer workers than a year ago with industries at about two thirds capacity. New York City records the largest unemployment share while Michigan bears the sharpest decline with plants 82 percent down from a year earlier.
Official returns from the miners election show Robert Harlin won District 12 as International President candidate by 18,100 and Alex Howat by 30,000 as International Vice President candidate. Miners indicate dissatisfaction with 1919 strike handling and Lewis’s stance toward day wage demands and the Bituminous Coal Commission. Frank Farrington led a failed bid for higher shift pay. Farrington won the district with a large majority. Nettie True visited Johnston City for a brief visit Wednesday.
