A Sunday morning blaze in Hurst consumed the business section, with an estimated loss around 200000 dollars. Discovered at 3 a.m. in a pool room, the fire spread rapidly, destroying the Odd Fellows hall, hardware store, barber shop, confectionery, restaurant, grocery and pool room, while the bank escaped damage as the city faced a brief threat.
Springfield February 21 The Miners Examining Board for Southern Illinois will hold meetings in March at Collinsville Harrisburg Miners hall Carterville Johnston City Benton Du Quoin and Du Quoin March 2 and March 4 at miners hall Johnston City March 6 Benton March 7 Du Quoin.
In Chicago on February 22 officials declare miners will not pursue a six hour day or five day week if talks with operators occur before April first. Illinois operators say they will join the conference if legal. President John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers vows readiness to fight as delegates meet.

He argues six lives lost yearly and over 100 people sent to other cities due to lack of a modern hospital, urging a $150,000 goal with pledges and bonds, and promises an overseen, fireproof facility built to grow with demand.
A Sunday birthday celebration marked the 48th marriage anniversary of Mrs A Mendenall. Guests included Mr and Mrs Jesee Wortman, Mr and Mrs Hallie White and children, Mrs Hannah Harrison and baby, Mr and Mrs A Mendaman and daughter Cleophas, Mrs Hannah Gramer and Miss Milita Pro.
Saturday night at Thorn Place Mr and Mrs Leland Lough hosted a party while robbers in a wagon approached the side door. They sacked the house taking the entire wardrobe including farm clothes valued around 500 dollars. Tracks and footprints were found with many matches burned in rooms. A soaked ether ball was left behind. No trace of the culprits.
Assistant Principal Toure of M. T. H. S heads a housing committee to run basketball headquarters at Williams Furniture on West Main during the March tourney. A faculty committee and student volunteers will assist in greeting visiting teams and fans, transporting them from trains to rooms and the gym, and handling crowds downtown. A birthday celebration honored James Hartwell on his 96th birthday held Friday at his home five miles east of Marion. The event drew family members including Albert Hartwell, Mrs. Doug Durham, L. D. Hartwell, R. Hartwell, Ray Hartwell, Fred Hoffart, and Mrs. Hudgens Goddard, with a sumptuous noon dinner. Hartwell was born February 17 in Smith County Tennessee and moved to this county with his family.
Eliza Meaven wed Mark McAlpin at the bride’s home on East Allen Avenue in a ring ceremony. Rev J W Cummins officiated as Ruth Woodley played Mendelssohn. couple to reside with McLaren family until a Parish Park Place home is ready.
W R Young, Western Sales manager for Cosgrove and Co. and four Chicago salesmen inspected the Franco mines in Paulton and Johnston City on Monday and Tuesday. Whorley of St Louis visits Marion with his parents. F F Macklin also from Chicago paid a Marion business visit. Mrs Fred W Peebles returned from St Louis with her brother in law, Davis, who will visit soon.
The Marion high school team defeated Centralia 36 to 24 on the local floor despite a crowded gym. Marion started slow but surged to a wide lead as they outpassed and outplayed Centralia, whose offense relied mainly on close shots. The Sophomores topped Seniors 5 to 3 in the preliminary game, with the two teams tied on baskets and the rest from free throws.
Mrs Huck, daughter of the late William E Mason, has filed for the Republican nomination for Congressman at Large to fill the vacancy left by her father Congressman William B Mason. She is married with four children, a Washington High School graduate, and has traveled widely including a trip to Alaska during the skulduggery line dispute with England.
A surprise birthday dinner was held Sunday at J. H. Browning home for the 42nd birth anniversary of Mrs. Browning and the 1st anniversary of her son Coral. Guests included many relatives and friends who shared music, gifts, and a table of delightful foods as the Browning family returned from Sunday School.
The Ladies Aid of the Second Baptist church held a chicken supper at the Anderson home. Attendees arrived from five o clock, with serving lasting until 8:30. Donations were generous and will go to a church building fund.
The Williamson County Fair Association formed with William Dunston as president and P N Lewis as secretary. They plan a new grand stand, inspect Danville fair grounds, and raise premiums about 25 percent including a polled Hereford class. Sept 12 to 15 set. numerous committees and superintendents appointed for cattle, hogs, sheep, mules, gates, policing, attractions, speed, classes A to O, and education.
Lem Kelley fell from a cage about four p.m. Tuesday at Keystone mine near Pittsburg, dropped roughly 76 feet, and died shortly after surfacing. Coroner McCown’s jury ruled accidental death. Kelley, 22, married last year to Mabel Williams, was a United Mine Workers member with surviving relatives including Loren, Ulysses, and several sisters and in-laws.
Sheriff Kelvin Thax ton and deputies raided John Braughelis home one mile south of Big Muddy Mine and uncovered a subterranean chamber containing a still, twelve barrels of mash, several oil stoves, and other equipment for illegal liquor. They confiscated the still, broke up the stoves, and dumped the mash.
Drawings for the district basketball tournament to be held March 2 4 and 8 were distributed by Coach EB H Schrieber. The schedule opens March 2 at 7 00 pm with Ullin vs Creal Springs Marion plays Carbondale Normal High on Monday afternoon. Two champions will emerge from classes A and B to meet in Saturday finals.
A Saturday evening surprise birthday party celebrated Misa Helen Russell’s fourth birthday with games and refreshments. Guests included Mr and Mrs Bara Davis and families, Emery Russell and others, with many wishing her many more happy birthdays.
Smith of Carterville aged 55 and Rachel Rushing aged 42 will be married Wednesday evening by Squire Willampton. This marks Mr Smiths third voyage on the spa of ma.
