Cambria suffered near total loss of its business district when a blaze began at the Eiles Store Building. A youth wounded by a stray bullet, Warl Watson, was hospitalized in Herrin with a stomach wound amid dangerous conditions and a suspected cartridge explosion. Firefighters faced muddy roads and cut telephone service as the fire razed Eiles Store Company, Cambria State Bank, Moving Picture Show, barber shop, garage, and pool hall.

Born near Stonefort she would have been 57 last August eighth. The family moved to Marion four months ago after their Creal Springs farm burned.
