An explosion at Beyplian Powder Company west of Marion at 8 35 am injured R B Antip and killed Fred McCulley. McCulley died at Hervin Undertaker and Antip was taken to Herrin hospital expected to recover. Five men were in the plant. McCulley and Annie injured. McCulley sole supporter of mother and niece.

Oscar Holland, Miss Maude Holland and Mrs Rolla Holland were injured when a car driven by Tiosen Cagle struck their southerly bound vehicle at the corner of West De Young and North Court streets. Mrs Robert Yulef Died At Herrin
Funeral services were held for Mrs Robert Yule who died from pneumonia on Friday in Herrin. She was born in Murphysboro and lived most of her life there. Her husband, a coal miner, died about fifteen years ago. Surviving children are John Archie Frank Harvey Sarah and Mary Yule of Herrin. She was a devout Christian and a Presbyterian church member.

Miss Christina Webb reported celebrating her in laws thirty-eighth wedding anniversary when her ford car was stolen from City Clerk J. C. Webb’s front. Police found the unnamed vehicle abandoned in a mud hole eight miles east of Johnston City. Officers searched local roads and towns toward Benton after the theft.

The tipple was a total loss while other top works were saved leaving 140 men unemployed. Johnston City Boy Dies of Pneumonia at Christmas
William Babbington Jr son of Mr and Mrs William Babbington of Johnston City and nephew of William Connell of Marion died at Johnston City on Christmas Eve from pneumonia. He was 16 years old and died after a week of illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Johnston City home and interment followed at Mosehill Cemetery in Murphysboro.

Olympic Theatre workman injured by falling timber
Adolph Boucher superintendent of construction for the Olympic Theatre building was badly injured Tuesday when a two by four timber fell from the stage left, striking his right shoulder and tearing ligaments. Workmen are now employed overtime and the building is expected to reopen next Monday.

Two Men Die In Thompsonville Christmas Eve Gunfight
Thompsonville on Christmas Eve saw two men killed during a revolver fight on Mai street. Victims were C Sibmin Hart aged 45 and Jacl Galbraith 21 after Herbert Summers 19 was arrested for intoxication. Hart and Summers were escorted to jail when Hart and Del mar Plaster 24 joined, Hart warned Plaster off, then Hart fired hitting Galbraith. Plaster drew his pistol. Hart was killed in the exchange. A coroner's jury later examined the events.

Schools Will Reopen On Time Despite Illness
Dr L L Fowler of the City Board of Health said Scarlet fever and diphtheria cases are declining and that public schools will open as planned after the Christmas holidays. There are currently 12 scarlet fever and four diphtheria cases, down from 19 and the trend is favorable. Arrests Made in Energy Case Involving Shaulbert Family
Charles Shaulbert and his two sons Raymond and Ora were brought to the county jail on Wednesday morning on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Lee Thompson at Energy on Monday night. Police made no arrests Tuesday afternoon between 4 and 5 pm, releasing them at noon Wednesday. Coroner William McCown’s investigation continues into next Tuesday night to allow Sheriff time to gather more evidence. Shaulberts reportedly had coal theft past from a mine local and threats against Thompson. They were released at noon due to lack of evidence linking them to the crime. Orval Ackerman and others testified to seeing the murderer described as tall and slim, wearing a black overcoat, about 140 pounds.
