Five year old boy dies after being struck by car
Lester Paul Ward aged five years eight months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Altie Ward, was killed Saturday evening when struck by an automobile in front of his home at 608 North Court. Clar ence Yates driving south struck him as he ran from behind a northbound car. Coroner William McCown and a jury ruled death an unavoidable accident. Funeral services were held Monday at the South Court Street home conducted by Reverends J. W. McKinney and J. W. Cummins.

Tom Moore, a mine examiner for Old Ben Coal Co at Mine 17, was found dead after leaving home for Johnston City. His coat and hat were nearby, with his watch still running when recovered from the C. and B. 1 tank pond. A coroner's jury ruled death by his own action, leaving a wife and three children.

DuQuoin Judge Presides Circuit Court Session This Week

Athletes from Marion Township High School held a Friday field meet at the local school to select entrants for the upcoming district Athletics Meet in Murphysboro. Four teams captained by Wallace Casey Groves and Biggs competed. Groves led with 24 points, Casey 23, Wallace 14, and Biggs 4. Individual event winners included Wallace in pole vault alongside a tie for second, Belford winning shot put with Smith second, Casey taking running events, and Casey also winning hop-step and jump. The team results, records set, and improvements over last year highlighted strong turnout and local records.

Dropped Dead in Herrin on Sunday Evening

War hero Harold McCain buried with honors in Marion
Remains of Harold McCain killed in action in France were brought home for interment at Corinth after full military rites by Williamson Post 147 American Legion. The service included a rifle volley and taps, with a biography read and a memorial address. This marked the first home return of a soldier killed in action. Two marriages in Marion were announced Monday, one to Miss Margaret Brook and the other Miss Haver Norris to George Rochester, both recent ceremonies in Ann Arbor area venues or at the homes of local families.

The second annual American Legion spring carnival ended Saturday amid poor attendance due to cold and rain. Ruth Mercey led with 27 350 votes, followed by Jewell Moriny 20 570, Ruby Latham 19 520, and Vera Whitlock 14 800. A donated Victoria was awarded to John Mcintosh.

American Legion Honors Returned Hero at Rose Hill
Williamson Post 147 conducted the funeral rites for Harbert Roberts at Rose Hill cemetery with a military style procession. A band from Sols United Shows joined Marion musicians, and Rev J W McKinney and Rev J J Harris led services at the Christian church. The Legion performed the ritual at the cemetery and a volley was fired while Buglar Ray Robinson played taps as the casket was lowered. Funeral service noted for Sunday will honor Harold McGain killed in action.

Girl Shot Near Carnival Leads to Sheriff Bond
Saturday evening a car carrying Mr and Mrs Charles Williams and daughter Lucife, and Mr and Mrs John Jolly of Hervin, was shot at near the Marion carnival. A man in a passing buggy fired, wounding Miss Williams in the leg. The shooter fled. Dan Urban was later arrested on $1000 bond but not found with a revolver. Charles Rainey left for Mt Vernon for his ailing father. body to be escorted to the church in Corinth.
