Don Lovelace and Rene Franco report that as of July 1 the Presidio ISD tax assessor collector, Presidio County, and County Hospital District offices will merge. The move, approved May 11 by the County Commissioners Court and May 13 by the School Board, aims to provide five day a week service for residents south of the county. The new office, on the ISD campus, will handle auto license plates, registrations, special permits, liquor licenses, and possibly hunting and fishing licenses. The county will supply equipment and salaries, with local hiring for the office. Training by Francis Raso from the Marfa office will follow.
Shannon Mark Douthitt, 22, was sentenced in Fort Stockton to life in prison for the slayings of Billy and Betsy Stone at Chillcote Ranch. He must serve at least 20 years before parole eligibility, plus terms for jail escape and burglary. The judge noted costs and appeals in avoiding the death penalty.
