Christmas and New Year shift our publication days to Tuesday both weeks. Material due by 12 noon Friday and by 12 noon next Friday. O&A Big stock show at Agricultural Center features FFA and 4-H, auction at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Texas Department of Public Safety officials estimate as many as 29 people could die in traffic crashes during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The agency projects 12 fatalities in 30 hours for Christmas and 17 in 54 hours for New Year, urging defensive driving and belt use.
A series of special viewing sessions for Comet Halley at The University of Texas McDonald Observatory near Fort Davis in the Davis Mountains of West Texas. Sessions run Tuesdays Fridays and Saturdays at the W L Moody Jr Visitors Center with some dates excluded March 14 24 and April 27 28 at Davis Mountains State Park.
Marfa volunteers responded to a blaze at the Williams Ranch storage building north of Marfa this week. Firefighters found most of the structure and its contents destroyed before the fire was extinguished. Investigators reported four children playing with gasoline caused the ignition. No injuries were reported.
The Marfa office of the Drivers License Division will be closed December 24 and December 31. The Alpine office will close December 24 through December 26 and January 1.
The Marfa Weather column records overnight low 11 degrees at Marfa Station for December 13 1985 with notes that subzero has occurred only once in 22 years, plus two zeros. It lists past below zero nights, trends, and precipitation totals for 1985 at 17.41 inches compared to a 16.34 inch annual average.
The Marfa Independent announces an early deadline for display ads, news contributions, and classifieds on Friday Dec 20 at noon due to the Christmas holiday. The paper will publish Tuesday morning Dec 24, and both the Marfa Independent and Marfa Print Shop close Wednesday and Thursday.
Sul Ross State University holds graduation Friday at 7 30 p m in the Graves Pierce Physical Education Building with Dr May Freeman Lee of San Antonio as commencement speaker. A reception for graduates families friends and faculty will be hosted by President and Mrs Jack W Humphries from 3 to p m in the Student Center.
A Friday night crash on U.S. Highway 90, one mile east of Marfa, left four injured and one seriously hurt. Bill Parrott 20 and Christa Webb 15 were in the two pickups, with Svilvia Baeza 20 and Allen Thompson 17 as passengers. Parrott required head surgery. all others treated and released. A separate crash 26 miles south on U.S. 67 caused no injuries.
The annual Presidio County Livestock Show starts Friday at the Highland Fairgrounds Agricultural Center with weighings at 3 p.m. and lamb judging at 8 a.m. Saturday. Hogs, rabbits and horses follow, with sale planned for 7 p.m. Saturday. Marfa FFA Chapter members enter animals and bid support is encouraged.
Cami Jo Rentroe will represent Marfa as Duchess during the Sun Carnival events in El Paso. The schedule includes orientation, a New Year's supper, rehearsals, a luncheon at El Paso Country Club, a Military Ball at Fort Bliss, a brunch at El Paso Marriott, President's Supper, and a coronation at the El Paso Civic Center. Rentroe is a 1984 Marta High School graduate and Angelo State University student.
