An old newspaper fragment lists Castoria for infants and a June clearance sale at Taylor Mercantile Company Marble Hill urging heavy cuts on all merchandise with a free dish for every $10 purchase. It also reports obituaries and local notices including a veteran draft registration instruction and a death in Perry county.
Eleven residents were badly hurt when a tornado swept Lith ium nine miles from Perryville causing ten buildings to collapse. Fisher's brick store and nine frame homes were demolished as the tornado path stretched a quarter mile. Wires were down hindering casualty reports and names. Cape Girardeau telephone company reported the incident and casualty figures.
A staff writer recalls an odd replying ritual for starting a Ford in freezing weather. The tale humorously mixes myths, crude methods, and exaggerated steps such as reciting Arabic prophets, chewing gum, wiring with teeth, removing clothes, and cranking hundreds of turns. The punchline: if the engine backfires and knocks out teeth, the motor is supposedly started.
A fragmented editorial tone describes Montague Smith a bank cashier who faces a struggle for liberty. It portrays him as a resourceful man with cave-man savagery, initially smug and satisfied with life before a pivotal need changes his career and outlook.
