The Atlanta Constitution ponders the year past with questions of personal impact and progress. It notes a New York Stock Exchange seat selling for 88 000 dollars and comments that the buyer may have been tired or frenzied by the market’s frenzy.
William Curtis, Chicago Record Herald correspondent, spoke at Missouri University on Confessions of an Old Reporter. He praised the Bible as journalism’s best text, urged plain style, warned against sensationalism, and emphasized avoiding confidences and overuse of scoops.
The weekly agricultural letter notes Missouri leads the nation in corn yield over the 1902–1905 period with an average of 32.8 bushels per acre, surpassing Iowa and Nebraska and near Illinois. It urges farmers to improve statewide averages to 40 bushels by using sound seed selection, cultivation, and proper fertilizer. Gro, B, Eviits.
Sheriff Watkins forfeits his office to Coroner Dry and G S Cannon amid charges while on duty. A bond offer of 200 dollars was rejected as the circuit court met, with Watkins declining further action and remaining in office dispute unresolved.
The Benton Record laments Joe Watkins’s decline under whiskey. Though once a friendly, respected neighbor, he now faces a likely resignation as his office falters. The paper condemns the bottle’s grip, yet hopes for a return to the man who was a true friend to many.
The January frontispiece shows friends singing Auld Lang Syne as the old year ends. The issue includes humorous stories by Margaret Wagenhals and Cecil Deene, love and social sketches, home crafts, recipes, and features on elderly garments, carpeting on a small budget, sleeves making, and holiday entertaining.
A Sikeston Enterprise reader questions claims that drinking and eating too much are privileges for men. The letter asks if excess leads to poverty, family hardship, or public disgrace, noting how overindulgence harms dependents and homes during harsh winters.
An 19th century style note extols water as the key to clear skin and good digestion. It advocates drinking three pints daily, between meals, with a cupful on waking and before bed. It warns cold water can harden flesh unless taken with nourishment.
A Dunklin Democrat squib reports Squire Jim Williams paid 83 cents for a county clerk announcement. The paper notes the fee does not guarantee influence at primaries and mocks his suitability, calling him a fair to middling man with limited prospects.
A wary candidate insists he has little chance for the county clerk nomination and warns that any money he spends would be wasted. He jokes that if elected he would not know whether he is on foot or on horseback, indicating self deprecation about his political prospects.
William J. Bryan departed San Francisco on September 27 to voyage around the world. He plans to file letters from Thawaii, China, the Philippine Islands, India, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Palestine, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Ireland and the British Isles for The Commoner. The Rev Irl R Hicks Almanac will not publish for 1906 but his monthly Word and Works becomes a large magazine with storm and weather forecasts and astronomical features. The November issue contains forecasts January to June 1906. January issue, ready December 20, shows July to December 1906. Price one dollar a year. Mrs Catheroe Bolliger died December 15 1905 after a lengthy illness leaving a large family of early settlers. She was childless, generous to orphans, a longtime M E B Church South member, and resided with Mr and Mrs J Sharrock at Patton during her final years. Her remains were buried in Lombaugh graveyard four miles south of Sedgwick, leaving a brother two sisters and many relatives to mourn.
Reports from New Madrid and Greenville journals discuss a proposed electric railroad from New Madrid to Cape Girardeau via Sikeston Oran and Chatter noting investor interest. Local observers, including W L Mathews and W S Glass, survey routes from Williamsville to Chester Ill and urge railroad construction as a catalyst for regional commerce and growth.
