In a December 6 letter to the Farmington Times Hon M R Smith announces he is a Democratic candidate for Congress in the Thirteenth district. He cites illness, vows to appeal directly to voters, and lists issues including arbitration of labor disputes railroad regulation publicity for corporations federal licensing criminal prosecution of trusts tariff reform and anti- trust measures.
R. M. Wannueers, State Dairy Commissioner at Columbia, urges a shift from round and plug shaped butter to a rectangular one pound brick form. He argues bricks pack more securely, protect appearance in cold weather, wrap better in paper, and reduce damage when stacked, improving market presentation.

Three eight week winter Short Courses in Agriculture begin January 4 at the University to widen access for young farmers. A separate item notes a saloon burglary where a thief drilled through a rear door panel at J. W. Searcy’s and stole 85 or 86 dollars plus whiskey. The Southeast Missouri Teachers Association held a Thanksgiving meeting in Cape Girardeau with new officers elected R E Baily W L Johns Miss Alice Goodwin and Orville Zimmerman and a Perryville date planned for the next gathering. A report from Farmington claims Antoine Mullersman hit a sizable lead deposit while drilling a deep well east of Knob Lick.

Prof Alfred H Hughes resumes teaching in Dunklin county. Fulton Cooper from Wayne county gathered corn on his father's farm last week. The spelling bee scheduled for Friday night was postponed due to bad weather. G S Baker and L M Hughes are building new barns. Julius Rea reports his horse suffering from foot disease. The scribe attended Fred Whitener's personal property sale near Keelin store last Saturday. Robert Rex and Miss Maud Jackson wed at the bride’s home near this place in November with F M Morris officiating.
Tallent notes the stave haul is open and progressive farmers report good time and earnings on the road. Several farmers killed hogs last week and S J Long, a enterprising local lawyer, butchered hogs yielding about three hundred fifty pounds of meat. An infant of Mr and Mrs Lawrence of St Louis was interred.
Weather is mild for the season. Rendershot is seriously ill with pneumonia. Hahn lost a valuable horse last week. N. W. Shell moved into a newly built dwelling last Friday. D. J. Shell moved his Krallman photo gallery to Grassy then returned home. Charley Ford, noted Bollinger County teacher, seen on the streets Saturday. Barrett of Sylvan Ridge, J.
