The five day festival offers music, lectures and youth programs aimed at families traveling in hot weather. A season ticket halves costs and grants access to ten programs, including surprises for those who dislike lectures, with wholesome entertainment and instruction for children and adults alike.
A small cyclone swept Scott county on August 5 destroying a cane and killing eight. The Sligo & Eastern railroad extension rights of way are being cleared from East End to Laman farm on Big Brushy. Reports from Centerville Outlook, Greenville Journal, and Fredericktown papers cover local incidents, highway plans, a toe injury from a baling wire, a family shooting, burglaries, wheat yields, and Chautauqua success in Lonoke, Marble Hill church anniversary, and New Madrid land deals.
A group including a man named Cheatham tumbles into a dispute near Mandis. Car owner Maxwell’s windshield is broken by a rock, followed by a tense scene as the parties repair a Maxwell and camp near Salita. Travelers claim to have journeyed from California and now camp at a spring near Knob River east of Milmad station.
The Chautauqua is scheduled for five days starting August 30 and is praised as the best of its kind in town. A letter from United States Post Office P.M. William C. Murry of Doniphan, Mo notes the White & Myers Chautauqua’s performance from June 15-17 in Kansas City and endorses its quality.
Summer sale notes offer men's pubth beach suits and trousers with various colors and sizes. Straw hats priced around 125 to 450 dollars in multiple styles. Low canvas shoes priced from 165 to 450 dollars, with children and misses shoes on sale. Fresh groceries advertised weekly with typical prices.
Opal Misnes and Hetty Potter, Arkansas girls and University of Arkansas graduates, receive praise from speakers including Mr DePew and Miss Opal, while Hetty is noted as a veteran writer and DePew’s words highlight character, health, and wealth as virtues. The Potter- DePew company performs a nighttime prelude and much of the discussion centers on Taylor and Adams amid national ideals.
