Cole took a business trip to Cape Girardeau last week. Wheat crop looks prosperous while sowing lags due to wet weather. Mrs. D. M. Newell suffers a very sore hand. A. J. Lincoln considers moving his store to Bessville soon. Mrs. Mary Lincoln and children Hurricane viewed the sum of H. J. Lincoln this week.
The Weather Bureau reports vast flood extent across Mississippi Arkansas Louisiana Tennessee and Missouri totaling about 15 800 square miles with 379 685 towns and 30 500 farm residents affected. Land value and crops suffer while waters slowly recede promising uncertain yields this year. Memphis and Vicksburg note rising rivers and record highs while transfer boats across the river face impediments.
The Bollinger county board ordered a five percent rise in overall real estate assessments. It also reduced valuations for numerous properties led by G We Tarks and Elizabeth Baker, with many individual parcels and lots adjusted downward or upward under the order. The meeting adjourned to the fourth Monday in April as a Board of Appeals.
Philadelphia Maritime Journal notes that only a few American steel and iron ships bear the flag, naming Dirigo as the last full rigged steel ship and Kenilworth as denationalized. It cites iron ships like Annie Johnson and Archer, and iron schooner Josephine, plus eleven steamers trading with Europe, many built in England, and asserts most top merchant vessels were built on the Delaware.
Cape Girardeau Democrat reports returns from county school districts are incomplete but indicate Tom E. Joyce will win a second term as county school commissioner. In the same issue the city notes the death of former Congressman Arnoldtather at his home, age eighty plus, after a period of feeble health.
