Replacing Mix Cows With Young Purebreds Boosts Profits
In St Louis County Missouri the Missouri Agricultural Extension Service highlights a dairy improvement path. Jno L B Ruland joined a proposed association in 1919 at Webster Groves and helped push it forward. Boland then shifted to high class young purebred Holsteins, removed lower cows, and saw rapid gains. First year: 623 pounds milk per cow and 161.6 pounds fat with profits above feed costs. Second year: milk up 7,525 pounds of fat and profits rise 1221 per cow above feed costs. Production increased 125 percent, fat 04 percent, profits 65 percent, suggesting Missouri dairymen could profit more by elevating herd quality.
