In September 1835 a small schooner carried settlers toward Green Bay and Milwaukee to attend the first land sale. Agents bid for lands at the Fox and Milwaukee rivers while settlers formed a protective club, noting preemption rights and rival speculators. Many lands were bought by speculators. several profits and losses followed as the sale proceeded and Milwaukee grew. The writer recalls the rough journey, frontier roads, early mills, and the excitement of land speculation, along with social glimpses of pioneer life and the emergence of Milwaukee.
