Poppy Day Proclaimed by Manito Mayor

Mayor Christopher J. DeSutter proclaims Saturday May 24 as Poppy Day in Manito urging citizens to wear memorial poppies to honor Americans who died in World War I II and the Korean conflict. Disabled veterans will distribute poppies at the steels all day Saturday by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Hill-Palmer Post and Auxiliary finalized plans for Poppy Day and Memorial Day events. Poppies total 700 units for sale with Auxiliary canvassing, main street presence, and funds supporting Veteran Rehabilitation. Memorial Day features include a new Mens Chorus, Forman High School sextet, St. Jose School Band, and Rev. Joseph Albright. Parade ends at Memorial Triangle.

Death of Nicholas Graff Retired Farmer in Illinois

Nicholas Graff 82 a retired farmer died May 4 1952 at Methodist Hospital Pedia Illinois after a long life in Manito area He was born March 1 1870 in Dieckerfeld Germany and immigrated with family to the United States in youth He was active in St Pauls Egypt Lutheran Church Meadow Lawn Cemetery Association and local boards He married Ella Gripp in 1899 and survived by daughter Leona Christina son Leonard Joseph two grandsons a granddaughter and several great grandchildren Funeral services were held at St Pauls Lutheran Church with burial in Meadow Lawn Cemetery

Local notes on hospitalizations and injuries in Canton

Mrs J T Corbett reports daughter Helen Daughty of Oakland underwent major surgery in an Oakland hospital last Friday. Mrs James Seelye injured her sciatic nerve by a fall in the Tess Velde home ward and is inactive until recovery. Frank Palmer and wife visited Canton to see sister in law Jayton Folkman recovering from a kitchen ladder accident. Folkman suffered a wrist fracture and deep arm laceration needing thirteen stitches. She was treated at Graham Hospital and sent home to 1042 E Chesnut St Canton.
