Plane crash kills Pvt William Rakestraw near Corona

Pvt William Franklin Rakestraw of Manito was killed when a rented plane apparently ran out of fuel after takeoff near Corona California. The pilot was identified as Paul Leonard Green of St Paul Minnesota with 4000 flying hours. Rakestraw, born June 7 1932, is survived by his parents two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be Saturday at St John Lutheran Church Sand Prairie with military rites at Glendale Memorial Gardens.

Town Meeting and Election Notice for Manito Illinois 1953

The town of Manito Mason County Illinois schedules its annual meeting and election on Tuesday April 7 1953. Polls open 6 am to 5 pm at Precinct 1 Manito Opera House and Precinct 2 Town Hall. Officers elected include Supervisor Assessor Town Clerk two Justices of the Peace and two Constables. A town meeting follows at 2 pm at Town Hall with a moderator present to hear reports and decide on appropriations and matters before the town.

Rotary Club Discusses State Judicial Reform Plan

The Manitou Rotary Club met with one absentee, hospitalized after an accident. Bernard Hoffmann of Pekin spoke on proposed changes to the state judicial system, urging members to contact Springfield reps to support DOJ involvement. Anniversary banquet with Bradley University music majors planned for next week.

35th Birthday of American Legion Honored in Mason County

In Mason County the 35th birthday of the American Legion will be celebrated with all Posts and Auxiliaries taking part on Tuesday evening March 17 at Havana Leviton Hall. A pot luck supper starts at 6 30 followed by a program by the accordion class of Mrs Harry Schoonover and Bingo games. Families should bring sandwiches a covered dish and table service.

Forman Braves Fall to Peoria Central in Tournament

Forman lost to Central of Peoria 66 to 42 ending their state tournament hopes. Parker Lawks led Manito with 14 points, while Ron Thomas and Loren Sunderland each scored 9 and Dick Wells 7 as the team reflected proudly on a season that included a Pekin win and a victory over Delavan.

John Baker Dies at Home of Son-in-Law in Spring Lake Township

John Baker died Monday evening March 9 at 7 00 PM at the home of his son in law Dean Albis in Spring Lake Township. The body was taken to Johnson Funeral Home in Manita and later moved to Beck Funeral Home in Bloomington. Mr. Baker lived in the Bloomington area.
