Photos show stages of Mackinaw river flooding near Manito and Parkland Illinois. Early flood left waist high corn and bean fields behind. workers battled water for 16 hours to save crops. by the next day water receded two feet offering a view of damaged corn bean and small grain fields.
Sgt. William M. Reynolds 25 of Manito was found in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head in a Burlington Iowa cafe restroom. A Marine veteran with World War II service in the Sixth Marines and Korean War duty in the First Marines, he recently returned from a 30 day rehabilitation leave and faced re enlistment, with transfer plans to Great Lakes Naval Hospital after Des Moines care.
Due to shortage of material the Forest City Homecoming will not be held this year. W. C. Langston serves as president and Mrs. Mabel Emmons as secretary.
Rev and Mrs Johannaber who served as visiting professor of missions and Christian education relocate to Gerber California. Mr Johannaber will pastor a Methodist Church there.
Pfe Arthur W. Schimmelpfenning of Manito Illinois recently completed a leadership training course at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri conducted by the 6th Armored Division. The program focused on leadership training inductee methods and instruction delivery. Graduates will become instructors or replacements with line units and some may enter Officers Candidate schools. He enlisted January 16.
Manito pitcher Bob Smith earned a 7-0 win over Hanna City on Sunday with seven strikeouts and one walk. Heston of Hanna City fanned four and walked three. Smith hit a three bagger, the sole extra base hit, as Manito scored two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and seventh, while Hanna City committed four errors to Manito's three.
Mr and Mrs James Gilmore announce the birth of a baby girl named Gail Marie on July 12 at 9 00 am in St Francis hospital. She is the couple’s first child with maternal grandparents Louis Fingard Pekin and paternal grandparents Harold Gilmore Manito.
A 1946 Manito High School graduate, who later studied at Brown's Business College in Peoria in 1949, was employed for one year as an insurance adjuster by Farmers Automobile Insurance Assn. in Pekin.
The Forman Community Unit district board chose Leonard O. Hewitt of Princeton to serve as superintendent succeeding J. J. Rush. Hewitt, 40, brings 17 years of teaching and 12 years as principal or superintendent, with degrees from Illinois and Ball State. He and his family will relocate from Princeton, Illinois.
