Dairy Feeding Costs Cut Boosted Profits With Fertilized Pasture
Mid dle est Soil Improvement Committee urges use of well fertilized pasture and hay to cut feeding costs. Dairy cattle can produce 70 to 80 percent of milk on pasture plus hay, beef cattle gain on 75 to 85 percent roughage, sheep on 80 to 90 percent roughage, with total digestible nutrients from pasture costing about 75 cents per 100 pounds. Three steps needed: nutrient-rich soil, legume grass mixes, and sound management.
