Manilla Race Club Prep For Cup Meeting With Big Prize

Manilla Race Club readies its Cup meeting next Saturday with a total prize pool about £700. Five races will each offer £100, the Cup over a mile adds £200 and a handsome trophy. Over 70 horses nominated, Inverell entrants in town training. Tote in operation, strong betting, new grandstand available for patrons.

Race Club President Home From Overseas Trip

The Express reports the Race Club president W J Byrnes will return for the meeting and hopes to see his colours in several races including the Cup. Club secretary D E Hunt says entry numbers were disappointing but weather may produce a good meeting. Weights list for 5 furlongs flying handicap maiden and progressive handicaps follow.

Protest Over Station Call Sign by Municipal Council

The Manilla Graziers Association protests the ABC call sign 2M for Regional Station 2M. They demand changing to 2NU Manilla with Tamworth studios. Mr C L Wilshire argues Manilla should be included. the group seeks federal support through Mr D H Drummond to press the change.

Successful Show Ball at Manila Agricultural Society

The Show Ball drew about 450 to 500 patrons on a mild night ideal for dancing. The Hall resembled an old English cottage and featured top decorations praised by attendees. President Tom Bowman opened the ball and thanked attendees as the Ladies Auxiliary led by Mrs Hillary Wheeler prepared and served a cheery supper. Music by North and Morrisons orchestras kept guests dancing while balloons lit the evening. Jim Russell acted as master of ceremonies and the Ladies Auxiliary extended thanks to all helpers for a highly successful event with a £300 meal decor in the supper room reflecting postwar generosity.

Upper Manilla School Needs Repairs and Updated Furniture

At a Mandowa Shire Council meeting Cr G Bowman cited unsatisfactory conditions at Upper Manilla school noting no work in over 20 years. The building needs repairs and painting with outdated seating. Mr Chaffey to approach the minister. The Education Director in Newcastle will handle repainting, and furniture plans await department review.

Rifle Shooting Schedule Update for Handicaps

The fourth stage of the John Blair Handicap over 500 yards was postponed due to rain and will be held Sunday afternoon October 10. Next Saturday’s shoot will cover the fourth stage of the G S Handicap over 300 yards and include the Challenge Cup.

Hospital Upgrades At Hospital Board Approves Electric Sterilizer

Board to replace steam operated sterilizer in operating theatre with an electric all purpose speed sterilizer at £750 funded by Hospitals Commission. Commission to install soon. Also, heating upgrades in wards funded £252 with three large and two small Dimplex heaters to be purchased and an extra £28 to replace a cold feed tank on the steam boiler.

Mixing Insecticides At Manilla Farmers Meeting

At the Manilla Branch monthly meeting of the Farmers and Settlers Association members discussed proper mixing of insecticides for grasshopper spraying. H V Dowe noted past failures stemmed from improper mixing and cited recent plagues. The group passed a resolution urging landholders to obtain full mixing instructions from the P P Board officer in the district.

Street stall licenses approved by Municipal Council

Seven street stall applications were heard at Tuesday night’s Municipal Council meeting and approved for North Manilla Progress Association Manilla Ambulance Auxiliary Roman Catholic Church Manilla RSL Auxiliary and others. Remaining applications for November were not granted as all submitted names were identical and were drawn.
