Australian Workers Union forms local committee and resolutions

At a 1 October meeting the Australian Workers Union formed a local committee and elected officers. Monthly meetings will review union concerns. Resolutions include a ban on members working where Italian POWs are employed, publishing the protest in the Worker and local paper, and pushing for a five day week. Also discussed is the definition of wool for branding purposes, with Holt noting an English Act includes fibres from sheep, alpaca, rabbit, and horse hair.

Dog licenses due in Manilla amid low registrations

The Clerk of Petty Sessions Mr A Watkins said dog licenses expired September 30 and few applications had been received in Manilla. Owners have until October 14 to re register. After that penalties may follow. In rural districts the rule allows registering one cattle or pest control dog and waives fees for useful pets owned by pensioners or the infirm.

Cemetery Work Progress Reported by Manilla Committee

The newly formed Cemetery Management Committee has carried out substantial road work at Manilla cemetery. A meeting of the Committee will be held at the Conneil Chambers at 7.30 p.m. on Friday night to report on progress.

Meritorious work noted in weekly tests for Classes 3 to 6 with dictation and arithmetic names. Secondary sport includes Oxley teams in cricket and vigoro results against Namoi, plus shields won by Third, Sixth classes and attendance and marching competitions. Manilla Bowling Club sets the annual meeting for Wednesday October 11 at 8 pm with a postmeeting Smoke Social and prize presentation. Sunday offers the last season play.
