First Big Snowy Project Will Be Completed Next Year
The Guthega Munyang hydro project in the Snowy Mountains aims to be in operation by mid next year after a Norwegian firm won the contract and faces a £10,000-a-week penalty for delays. Work began eighteen months ago with round the clock shifts, heavy tunnelling, surge tanks, and a vast 30 mile main tunnel planned beneath the range to feed multiple power stations on the Snowy scheme.

Power tunnel plan links Island Bend to Murray basin
Describes dual tunnel routes under Upper Snowy at Island Bend near a burnt hotel site and under Gebi River. A 1100 ft shaft at Island Bend leads to a vast underground cavern housing a power station. Water from Island Bend Reservoir drops 1000 ft to drive turbines, feeding water from Jindabyne to Murray catchment. Access lifts connect station and Island Bend. Priority Guthega section aims to generate power early, with staged later sections increasing output.
