Restoration of Pipes Over River
At a Municipal Council meeting the Minister for Public Works and Local Government outlined options for replacing a sewage main across the Namoi River to connect a pump well with West Manilla treatment works. Council backed river bed relaying at the contractor’s cost, with an official opening planned for May 1 1953. A deputation will discuss payment. The Town Clerk said bed relaying would proceed immediately.

Namoi Regional Library reports gains and gaps in 1952
Town Clerk Mrs Browne reported at Tuesday night’s council meeting on the Namoi Regional Library Committee meeting in Tamworth on March 12. Books purchased in 1952 were £8592/19/0 with depreciation bringing value to £43847/4/4 across the region. Manilla branch held 181 books across fiction 365 non fiction 404 children 4122 total. Enrolments reach 365 with 375 adults and 262 children. Since Mandowa Shire joined, 10 adults and 3 children used the service. Executive officer Mr Williams noted enrolments up at all centres. region totals 5162 adults and 4627 children. Quarter ending December 31 saw 10982 fiction and 4997 non fiction in adults total 15929 borrowed plus 13943 in children. Cockburn Liverpool Plains and Peel Shire abstain from joining and are urged to join before 31/12/1953.

Manilla League sets hospital funds and ANZAC events
At the March 6 1953 League meeting in the Club Rooms President Alex Dupres led discussions on allocating £106 15s 4d to Manilla Hospital for a special amenities fund and bed earphone installations. Anzac Ball organizer Mac Hughes aims to host the 1953 ball on April 17 and a dawn service plus parade are planned for Anzac Day with a reunion to follow. A £2 2s donation goes to the Flood Relief Appeal. RSL Club affiliation is delayed. Duprez Perris and Gregor to attend the Coronation public meeting March 24.

Manilla Council Briefs Show New Engineer and Stalls
Manilla Municipal Council met in the chambers on Tuesday night and welcomed new Electrical Engineer J Dunbar. Street stalls were approved for Methodist and Catholic church groups with dates 21 March and 18 April 1953, and Tin Hat Day for the United Returned Soldiers Fund on 24 April 1953. No. 2 Cricket Oval trustees were named and an exemption from rating granted, with ground use limited to non-cricket uses. Namoi River Bridge footway funds were discussed. Main Roads will cover three quarters of earth-work widening on eastern approaches. Council pressed for pedestrian access, requesting the department submit a plan.
