Council opposes closing a key Rushes Creek road citing its role as a main access into town. The Mayor warns against moving residents off back streets while Aldermen argue for ratepayer input if closure is proposed. Expansion space exists south of the boundary for Agricultural Society grounds.
Hospital finances improved in June with a special grant of £00 from the Hospitals Commission. The grant mainly repaid inter-hospital borrowings, all accounts up to 30 June paid, and the hospital opened the new financial year with a debit balance of £252 7 8, down from £328 14 0 on June 1. June receipts total £1687 10 3, including subsidy £821, grant £600, and patient fees £260 3 6. payments were £1611 3 11, with salaries £747 12 9 and trade creditors £147 12 7.
The Manilla Municipal Council held its monthly meeting with Mayor G F B Grill presiding. A tribute was paid to J D Kennedy, longtime council member. Street stall licenses were granted to Southbrook Settlers Association and Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. A shrub at the Market and Manilla corner near the centre garden was ordered removed and replaced to improve sightlines. Public Works grants discussed included 21000 toward tar sealing and 1000 toward sheds at Frank Chaffey Park. Guttering and footpath issues at 60 Rowan Street were acknowledged for future work. Water connections approved for Victor and Stoddart streets and an extension to Maunder’s property. White way lights extension request from the Imperial Hotel.
The New England University College Narrabri will host a three day School of Animal Husbandry and Agriculture from August 12 to 14. A large panel of highly qualified lecturers will cover soil fertility wheat culture and animal health with sessions on breeding sheep and cattle, feeding economics and stocking policies. Farmers and grazers are urged to enrol by Monday July 27. Fees are £5 5s 0d with local accommodation in Narrabri available.
Applications involve Messrs W C and H W Toda seeking electricity and water for property in Mandowa Shire near the Municipality boundary. Both requests were granted with specific conditions, including water and power connections for the site.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Municipal Council a Scroll of Honour from the United Nations Appeal for Children was presented by His Excellency the Governor of NSW Lt. General Sir John Nordcott. The Scroll was given to the Municipal and Shire Councils after they conducted a joint appeal for funds and reached the quota.
Over 200 patrons attended the Annual Ambulance Ball at Memorial Hall on Friday night deemed one of the season’s best. MC Jack Hisco kept guests dancing while Tamworth District Ambulance Service Superintendent Hermanson and a Tamworth Committee member attended. Continuous music came from Pavy’s Manilla and Morrisons Tom Worth orchestras. Buffet style supper by Auxiliary drew praise. The committee thanks attendees and helpers, especially Ladies Auxiliary, and residents for donations toward supper.
The Municipal Council approved permits on a Tuesday night meeting for street appeals. Units of Returned Soldiers were granted permissions for fundraising and public activities including Poppy Day on June 11, 1963 and Button Day for the Sydney Rescue Work Society on August 21, 1953.
