A council report notes several trees in Rowan, Strafford, Court and Manilla Streets are in dangerous or doubtful condition and should be removed. Pepperinas and Silky Oaks near the Namoi River bridge are cited, with removals to be followed by replacements where appropriate. The council adopted the report pending inspection of Silky Oaks by the Parks and Gardens Committee before removal.
Har vey and Myers fell to Price and Ridgwell in Sundays round of the Football. Len posted two strong rounds, 36 and 38, with handicap looming at 8. Kennedy and ONeill beat Wicks and Rabbelt. Russell and Collins, Stevelny and Windeyer, Dyson and Abberfield beat Wicks and Kimber. Paterson and Suttie remain undefeated over Coyle and Taylor. A, B and C grade semi finals were led by ONeill over Turner, Myers over Dyson, Kimber over Wicks. Fred and Mick praised for standout play. Next weekend no competition as many Associates head to Barraba centrens tournament. Mrs. Hardcastle trophy first round won by Mrs. Riddell. mixed foursome at Barraba next Saturday, partner selection required. Sunday flag competition scheduled.
George Frederick Baker, a Cobbadah resident aged 69, died June 23 at Barabba Hospital. Born in Bundarra he lived in the Barraba district over 40 years and was a former drover and well known high jumper Fleetfoot and Mulga Boy. His wife predeceased him. he leaves four daughters and three sons Ethel Urquhart Herbert Daphne Thelma Valda Howard Morris.

Manilla Municipal Council plans to protest to the Australian Broadcasting Commission General Manager over the call sign of Regional Station 2M. In Tuesday's meeting Mayor Alderman Grill noted the transmitter is at Manilla and the sign should include Manilla. The issue will be raised with the Post Master General via Senator Anthony and MP D H Drummond. Previously Manilla branches of the Farmers and Settlers and Graziers associations raised the matter with the ABC but were told Tamworth must be used for all correspondence.
Mandowa Shire Council agreed to a plan defining areas to be controlled under Building Regulations. The plan outlines boundaries from portions in Dinawir to Namoi River and Greenhatches Creek, aiming to include potential subdivisions while excluding farming land. An application to the Minister for Local Government will seek proclamation under Part XI of the Local Government Act.
Book review recounts Lieut Col Callinan’s account of the 2/2 and 2/4 Independent Companies in Timor. In 1942 Japanese forces faced 300 Australians who waged guerilla warfare, denying surrender and hindering 30,000 enemy troops, aided by Timorese natives. The St Andrew's Presbyterian Church Manilla celebrated its Golden Jubilee with two services on Sunday July 25 at 11 am and 7 30 pm. The Women's Guild planned a Golden Jubilee Ball on July 30 in Memorial Hall with Hon W A Chaffey opening the event and a large birthday cake for attendees. Tamworth Highland and Manilla Pipe Bands.
