Irish Land Purchase Annuities Review in Commons
In the Commons the Secretary for the Dominions Mr Thomas reviewed the history of the Irish Land Purchase Annuities over 60 years. He stated Irish farmers bought their lands under 1881 terms, reducing rentals by over £3.5 million annually and repaying the State at just over half prior landlord payments. He said de Valera later refused to honor the solemn agreements, threatening annuities and other financial matters, leaving the British taxpayer with a looming alternative proposed by the Government.
