Counting to date shows Mr. Chaffey with 8199 votes and Mr. Scully with 7196. The figures reflect ongoing tabulation in a local race with results updating as ballots are counted.
Voting at polling centres shows Chaffey leading in Manilla 706 to 661 and across nearby districts with Chaffey totals of 33 to 56 and Scully totals of 15 to 21. Absentee declarations ran out before closing, leaving about twelve people waiting to vote as booths closed at 8 pm. Rates in Glen Innes rose to 2 2/3 pence in the pound from 2/2.

A 24 hour emergency iron lung service for polio victims has been established in Sydney with two machines from the American Society. One unit at Kingsford Smith Airport can be flown to any Commonwealth location, while another is kept by a metropolitan taxi service for rapid rail or road dispatch. President PT Du Mar says urgent cases require quick arrival of equipment, and the society provides iron lungs at no cost to eligible institutions. The service has previously flown lungs to New Guinea Fiji Guadalcanal and various district hospitals in Australia.
