Acting Flight Lieutenant D H Kennedy of Manila receives the Distinguished Flying Cross as part of a group of six Australians honored by the Minister for Air Mr Drake-Ford. Kennedy completed an outstanding tour of operations, serving as navigator on many sorties. His coolness under fire and leadership as navigation leader boosted his squadron's navigational standards.
Henry Percival Baker aged 45, eldest son of the late H M Baker of Manilla, died suddenly at a Sydney holiday resort on January 16. He leaves three children, sisters Mary Margery Sybil and Morris, and one brother. The funeral was held at the Eastern Suburbs Crematorium on January 18. Baker, a former Manilla resident, worked as motor mechanic and ran a petrol service at Manilla and Court Streets. He served on Manilla Municipal Council and spent years in Tamworth district and Minto. A funeral will be held in Manilla yards next Friday, February 11.
Residents faced sheets of dust and lightning as a cyclonelike gale hit Manilla on Tuesday night. Winds reached 80 miles per hour, tearing roofs, uprooting trees, and depositing earth on streets and homes. Power failed, rain followed, leaving widespread damage and about 20 repair applications filed for a single agency.
A clearance sale of farming gear and land is announced by Mr C W Abberfield at Tremayne’s property about 12 miles from Manilla on the Boggabri road. The sale date is Wednesday February 28. Full particulars will be advertised in due course by auctioneer Winjld Byrnes of Manilla.
