Soil Stewardship Week Observed Nationwide
Soil Stewardship Week observed May 15 to 22 with theme When We Care. Greer County Conservation District chair Leonard Graumann notes citizen responsibility to protect soil and resources. Local committee members Milton Vaughan Meredith Lauer Wayne Smith and John Birdavell will distribute church materials prepared by the National Association of Conservation Districts advisory committee. This marks the 23rd year of national and local Districts’ sponsorship following a long tradition of Rogation Days begun in France over 1,500 years ago to seek aid after crop failures.

Gordon Receives 50 Sponsorship for Choral Camp
Randy Gordon has received a $50 sponsorship from the Cecilian Music Club for the eighth annual Choral Camp at Southwestern State University Weatherford announced by club president Mrs Murel Dearly last week. The camp scheduled for June 1925 features instructors J M Trepp Northwest Music Services Vancouver and Southwestern professors Dr Charles Chapman Merle Taff and W G Akers. It includes concerts conducting music theory a talent show and private lessons.

Flood Gates Opened at Lugert as Red River Rises
Heavy rains in Beckham County caused the North Fork of the Red River to flood areas below Lake Lugert. About 25 residents were evacuated, gates were opened briefly to let people recover belongings, then reopened to accommodate the crest expected by mid afternoon. The last time gates opened was July 1975, the first time in over a decade.

Church Gives Rev. Marcy Recognition

Mangum Board of Education approved four resignations and four new hires at the May meeting. New hires include Jane Griffis Travis to teach secondary English, Linda Sue Parton in kindergarten, Charlotte Bratton and Maxine Wade George for grades. The replacements come from Mangum or nearby counties and replace retirees and departing staff. An annex to the high school library was tabled due to funding gaps, with future hopes for funds from the building fund.
