Sunday box service will be discontinued at the Mangum U S Post Office starting Sunday March 14. Postmaster Gifford Olive announced window hours Monday through Friday 8 30 a m to 4 30 p m and Saturday 8 30 a m to 10 a m.
Cindy Kennedy Lea Ann Nesmith and Jane Stone named as delegates to Girls State by the American Legion Auxiliary at a Monday meeting. Alternates are Debora Anderson Connie Rogers and Melanie York. The program runs May 22 29 at East Central State University Ada.
The Mangum Board of Education awarded a contract to Southwest Refrigeration Altus for 26,313 to install air conditioning in the high school. Superintendent Travis Slaton said installation will be completed this summer before the next term starts. The board schedules a special session Friday at 7 p.m. to discuss teachers contracts.
Mrs. James N. Smith 86 died March 9 at Mangum Nursing Center after a long illness. Services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Rev. C L Abercrombie of Altus officiating and Rev. Larry Stallings of Mangum assisting. Burial in Reed Cemetery. Ora Belle Smith born March 20 1889 in Brier Texas daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah Robertson came to Reed area as a teen. She married James Newman Smith June 6 1909 near Reed. They farmed in Russell until 1954 moved to Mangum. Husband died Dec 29 1962. Surviving five sons Floyd Tacoma Wash Elmer Oklahoma City Orville Ft Worth Paul Lawton Alton Mangum two daughters Gladys Ramsey Oklahoma City Joyce Wilson Weilston nineteen grandchildren seventeen great grandchildren two sisters Betty Rehner Amarillo Texas Ella Loftin Tulare California and two brothers J H Robertson Oklahoma City Roy Robertson Alva.

Mangum boys lost to Fairview 60-55 in the losers bracket then fell to Weatherford 54-49 in overtime at the area tournament in Weatherford. Ricky Bull led Mangum with 20 points, Marc Hatton 13, Kenneth Davis 11, Greg Jackson 10, John Skinner 2 as Mangum shot 54 percent from the line. The Mangum Tigerettes were eliminated after a cold shooting Friday 36-21 to Fairview and Saturday 67-37 to Kingfisher under coach Johnny Crabb.
A Mangum meat plant proposal led to the cancellation of a Tuesday meeting of county industrial bond trustees county commissioners and a representative from Elk City Gary Jones who submitted the plan asked to call off the session The proposal called for a 235000 meat processing building and cooler plus a 410000 investment for equipment fixtures trucks and operating capital The chamber industrial committee had unanimously approved the preliminary plans
Granite girls, coached by Donnie Elliott, were eliminated 60 to 43 in a first round state tournament game against Colbert. The team closed a strong season after sweeping district regional and area play. Elliott noted the squad was tight in their state debut and expects a strong next year with only Melinda Hogg Eva Holt and Laquita Petzold departing.
Incumbent Sheriff Max Burger announced Tuesday his bid for re election in the August 24 Greer County race. He will issue a statement later. County election officials said three offices will be on the ballot: sheriff, court clerk and county clerk. Filing for county offices is set for July 5 6 and 7.
Greer County Junior Livestock Show ended Monday night after a three day event with a premium auction raising 11,123.38 for prize money to 105 exhibitors. 196 animals were exhibited as prize money will be mailed after tabulation. OSU extension director Kenneth Anderson thanked supporters and leaders. a placings list follows on Livestock Page 10.
Funeral services were held at St. John s Baptist Church in Mangum for 75 year old Lemon Simmons wife of the late Leo Young and long time resident of Mangum. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery with Greer Funeral Home directing. Survivors include five daughters, two sons, twenty four grandchildren, and twenty nine great grandchildren, plus a sister and a brother.
Mrs. William A. Brice, 83, died Wednesday in Mangum City Hospital after a short illness. Services were held Friday at Greer Funeral Chapel officiated by Rev. Arden J. Smith. Burial followed at Cave Creek Cemetery, Vinson. Born January 15, 1892 in Ellis County Texas, she married Boss Brice November 10, 1909 at Waxahachie. They lived near Hollis and Vinson until his death in 1957. she then moved to Mangum. Surviving are five children, thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, a brother Curt Glenn, and a sister Agnes Billington.
