Malvern residents tracked travel and visits as many went to Omaha for shopping and events while others returned from trips. News notes include Walter Scott’s overseas arrival and Clifford Boyer’s safe seas report, along with local movements, school plans, and family visits amid family news and farm updates.
The Sowers family mourns after Floyd Sowers was killed when an automobile struck him near the home. Earl and Marion are serving in the armed forces, Harl at Camp Bowie, Fort Worth, and Marion at Camp Pike, Ark. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at three o'clock.
The Leader is asked to publish a card of thanks expressing heartfelt gratitude for sympathy and assistance during bereavement from Mrs M Cuntingham and children.
Miss Emma Hambsch wed James McKown in a morning ceremony at Red Oak. They returned to Malvern then visited Kingsley before settling in Malvern. The bride, Kinsey Dry Goods clerk, and groom, auto trucking entrepreneur, are praised as fine young folks with best wishes for a prosperous future.
The United States Food Administration announces price controls for county markets from September 18 through September 27. Officials urge compliance to stabilize supply and curb shortages. Local merchants and residents are advised to adjust purchases accordingly.
Miss Florescé Durbin and Dr. J. W. Baer wed at the Durbin home in Malvern on September 4. Rev M A Gabié performed the ceremony for the couple, witnessed by close family. They plan housekeeping at J D Paddock property on north Mation Avenue and will be at home after November 1, with Durbin a Mills County standout and Baer a respected veterinary surgeon.
The Malvern Branch Red Cross Surgical Dressing Department is organized with Mrs. A. E. Cook as supervisor. They have free space donated by Own State Savings Bank and L. W. Boehner for work and dressing rooms. After training by Mrs. D. W. Bushnell and Mrs. Thomas Metcalfe, twelve women are now supervisors. They expect to complete 1200 dressings by September 22 and invite volunteers to help with the work.
The Red Cross Auxiliary No.2 of Barrett school district hosted a farewell party for Opal Irwin at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Walter.
A patriotic children's program featured Christy and Mrs. Davis with a Sally presentation and Opal receiving a wristwatch and locket from family and Auxiliary. A cake and ice cream feast followed, with Harry Landis entertaining. The crowd praised the Red Cross support as Opal prepared to depart for Camp Dodge.
Attend Style Show Mia GO 0 Nichols and Fred Mul holland Jr. autoed to Omaha Wednesday to attend the Style Show in that city this week. Mulholland joined last night with Miss Mary Goff Mia Edo Vogle and J Ay Fletcher. The exhibit is held in completion with the market week in Omaha each year.
About a dozen members of Miss Mabel Short's Sunday School class planned to surprise her but she anticipated them. The evening featured games and music. Pratt was served late, and all said they enjoyed themselves. Miss Short has been away all summer and returned to South Dakota yesterday where she expects to teach the coming year near Salem.
