The tar era brings work to older youths and many Malvern kids. Ten years of age and above now learn to labor, mowing lawns, stocking stores, and taking on chores. The shift offers practical skills though it alters carefree summer days.
In a community note the writer jokes about sending a request to Town State College for garden articles on Victory Gardens. He laments weeds after a vacation, mocks non-noxious weed guides, and urges specialists to devise wartime weed uses. The American Legion Auxiliary met at the home of Mrs. Earl Bobbitt with Mrs. George Rew assisting. Eighteen members paid dues and the group planned committees for the year including Americanism Richard Pullman, child welfare Hazel Bobbitt, education of the children of war veterans Grace Johnson, and other roles. Rita Kruse reported on the Des Moines department convention. Mrs. Ide Flanagan was elected department chaplain. September meeting set for Sept. 28 at Mrs. Ed Sanders’s home with Mrs. Gail Moore assisting. The Loyal Gleaner class hosted a party at Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Anderson’s home for Mar garet Rigging and Kenneth Desichler, with prizes awarded and many attendees listed. Newlyweds honored at a shower for Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stewart. guests included numerous Silver City residents and relatives. A farewell party for Mrs. Lynn Sanderson, an O.E.S. officer, was held at the I.O.O.F. hall in Bilger City with prizes awarded.
Sunday School met on Aug 30 with 48 attendees and five birthdays. The post poned carnival was held Friday, raising over 60 dollars, plus 15 from a quilt sale for the Sunday school treasury to aid in paying for a recently purchased plane. The Roller Cvew Party honored Jewell Mahan, who departs for nurses training in Council Bluffs, and Ruth Ellen Schilling, bound for Peru State College. Several local residents traveled for business and visits, new nuptials were noted, and community gatherings continued through the week.
A pot luck dinner Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs B F Bollington celebrated the former's birthday with guests including Arthur Frazier Ward and Madeline Cooper Harold Cooper and Darrell Noel and family Ree tor Bullington Shelley and family Bellenbarger and others. Nearby notes mention farewells for Carroll Skailbere enlists in the army and various community activities and school enrollments in Emerson area.
The Loyal Lasttes 6-37 clnh held a Wednesday meeting August 36 led by the president. Minutes from the prior meeting were read and approved. New member Catsta Kruse joined. Irene Maddocks gave a talk titled The Flag Speaks. Games, refreshments, and hostess duties followed. Attendees included Catita Bonnie Kruse Rose Matiewi Jama Frances Mary Cupson Sherry Dee McClatlin Lucille Fiammant Irene Maddocke Mary Lyn White Catherine Goos and Mrs Dora Goos. The next gathering will be at the leader's home.
