Community News Notes From St Vernon Area

Mrs Virgil Forney hosted a toy party with Fight ladies attending demonstrations by Mrs John Hall. The group enjoyed sherbert cookies and coffee for refreshments as neighbors and relatives gathered for visits and funeral services for the elder Mrs Burton in Red Oak and nearby towns.

California Visitors Complimented At Dinner

Hosts Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Wilson entertained a group of former Vernon residents and California visitors at a cooperative dinner on Wednesday. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Hurbert Chambers of Ta Jolla, Don Cimmingham of Los Angeles, Mrs. Robert Harris and Phyllis from Centralia, Washington, and several local couples. Other attendees traveled from near Glenwood, Hastings, and Shenandoah. News also notes the arrival of Carey Dean Greedy, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Gale Greedy of near Sidney. The week’s good weather aids farmers planting wheat, harvesting soybeans, and cribbing early corn.

Malvern Town Council Adopts Ordinance 145 on Age Restrictions

Minutes from Malvern Iowa council adjourned meeting October 6 1969 show Mayor Gearhart and four councilmen present with one absent. Ordinance 145 sets entry and admission restrictions for under twenty one year olds into Class B beer permit venues and details penalties. The reading and passage actions follow standard three readings dispensed with, then approval of Ordinance 143 and adoption of Ordinance 145. Truck bid from Salyers Auto Company for a 2 ton truck with heavy V8 motor and trade in approved for 2728.71. November 3 1959 election planned at Liberty Memorial Building basement with specified polling hours and election board setup. Woodford R Brington is town clerk.

Terry Sell Named President of Center Feeders 4 H Club

At the Hilton place the Center Feeders 4 H club held its monthly meeting with 12 members present. LaVerne Obrecht proposed ideas on the main business and officer slate. End Brucellosis Indemnities Cut for Next Year Mills County

Extension Director Harlan Stratton said county cattlemen will not receive indemnities for cattle tested and sold under the federal brucellosis program next year. Federal funds, previously used for positive reactors, have been reduced, shifting to ring tests and vaccination funded by county money. Herrick of Iowa State University notes over 1 million dollars of federal money was spent last year. less than half next year.

County Test for Brucellosis Plans Moves Forward

Herrick notes indemnity payments lose appeal when cattle prices rise as vaccination gains value for the industry. More than 65 counties including Mills County have petitions to become modified certified Brucellosis free and testing is set to proceed. When 75 percent of owners representing 75 percent of cattle petition, all herds in the county will be tested and infected herds quarantined unless reactors are disposed of.
