Leader visits Malvern fifth graders on printing plant tour

The Mills County Leader welcomed 39 fifth graders from Malvern schools and teacher Pearl Geiger for a tour of the office. They inspected typesetting and the big book press, while the paper notes stamps marking colonial printing anniversaries and a new automatic press installation. Additional items include autographs from U S public printer Kon A E Glegengack, and a 1905 Odd Fellows feature found by G C Boston. Uncertainty remains over Thanksgiving date as state law ties it to presidential or governor proclamation.

Mills County to Be Well Represented at Ak-Sar-Ben

Mills County sends 12 boys and 2 girls to enter 4-H baby beef cattle at the 12th annual Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock and Horse Show in Omaha. The event, billed as the world’s largest 4-H exhibition, runs next Sunday at 2 p.m. with notable acts, including Ken Maynard and his horse Tribute Organ, plus a Mid-West championship band contest and a regional flower show. County banks show October deposits rise in Mills county

Mills county banks published Oct statements after a state banking department review. Deposits rose nearly 200 000 since September 1938 and 116 000 since last June while loans declined from June and Sept 1938. Frank Haines Dies of Heart Attack at Home

Frank Haines, 70, died suddenly from a heart attack at his Malvern home last Friday afternoon. The community mourns his loss as relatives gather for funeral services on Monday. Liquor Sales Rise in September in Malvern Area

Fall thirst struck the Milla country with light September demand and a minor increase in liquor sales. Total sales reached 3798.48 for September, up from August. Malvern and surrounding townships reported various small amounts, with Melvera state showing gains and county totals listed as 3.05.86.

Water fills Glenwood Lake from Keg Creek inlet

Water began flowing into Glenwood Lake at about 1,000,000 gallons daily after the Keg Creek Dump inlet was completed. The pump moves around 700 gallons per minute, and Glenwood Park Board members in charge expect the lake to be filled by December 1. An extensive grounds improvement program is planned for winter to create an ideal recreation area.

Officers to manage the 1940 AAA farm program in Mille county were elected Saturday morning in county AAA offices. J F Wearin Malvern chair, GCBE Wilson Anderson township, and Charles Shaw Deer Creek two, named to lead. James N Benton named treasurer and Margaret McCormick secretary. Wearin served since 1934, Wilson since 1935, Shaw since 1938. The county committee handles grain loans parity benefits totaling nearly 1.5 million dollars and runs the program at about four percent administrative cost.

Hasselquist Injured in Gun Accident Near Home

Harvey Hasselquist, son of Mr and Mrs Hasselquist, was wounded Sunday at the Hasselquist home south of town when a .22 rifle discharged as he leaned it. The bullet entered his leg about three inches above the knee, leaving a clean hole. He returned to high school on Wednesday.
