Major Lyman opened the Republican campaign in Malvern last week with a candid, forceful address on current issues. Democrats and Republicans alike praised his honesty and clear presentation, while many voters and former regiment members expressed support. Opera House was filled as Lyman delivered one of his best efforts, drawing strong attention from local officials and constituents. Hon. A B Thornell, visiting district attorney and Republican candidate, was in town to engage with constituents and reinforce his judicial qualifications.
Mills County Iowa Board of Supervisors met in adjourned session on October 7 1886 with H B Cheney as chair. Records show numerous bridge work items at Purcell and others plus court house repairs and pauper care. On October 8 1886 the board allowed road notices and pauper bills, set Pacific Junction as voting place, granted a poll tax exemption for a cripple, and ordered a land assessment to pay judgments from the Walking Ditch Fund with allocations by class.
