State traveling library delivers a large list of titles now available at Malvern Public Library for readers. The catalog includes juvenile and adult works across adventure history travel and biography, with notes on travel images and foreign language titles.
Hoy Cannon of Tabor and Rosetta Kheloff united in marriage in Omaha on Saturday November 10 with Rev. L R Patton officiating. The couple, surrounded by both families, will reside on a farm near Sidney after March 1 and receive wishes from numerous friends.
National Y M C A war committee reports the drive exceeded the initial 35 million and the later 60 million goal. Mills County reached near 10,000 with Malvern led by P. M. Cadwell and captains L. A. Talbott and K. R. Cook, canvassing districts and raising hundreds of dollars including women teams totaling over 600. Subscriptions flowed from Malvern Silver Creek township and Glenwood, with notable gifts from Mrs. Boston and Mrs. McClymond and others.
The speaker asks American businessmen to support Christian civilization and attend church. He cites Indian shop safes secured by multiple padlocks as a metaphor for trust and moral character. The Little Light Bearers annual meeting will be in the church lecture room next Saturday at 2:30 PM. all interested are invited.
The lender will increase the annual subscription price to two dollars after January 31, 1918. The old price remains in effect until that date, driven by higher material costs which necessitate the change.
In response to rising costs The Leader announces a subscription increase to 2.00 per year after January 31 2018 while offering a grace period through November December and January for current subscribers to renew at the old rate. Publisher W P Wortman explains the broader market trend and commitment to local coverage.
Malvern reports the union services at the Baptist church to welcome Rev. A. R. Toothacre, the new pastor. Pastors and congregations from other churches dismissed their services to attend. A fine audience heard a strong sermon and favorable impressions were noted. The Baptist brethren are considered fortunate, hoping for a long and pleasant stay from the new minister.
W. Cooney, a Dodge agent from this place, left Saturday for the Dodge Company factory in Detroit. He travels with about fifty fellow agents, a jovial group expecting a great time on the journey from Council Bluffs.
R B Summers announced a dispersion sale of his stock and farm outfit planned near Uniontown Kansas in spring around January 1. He will offer purebred Hampshire hogs Shorthorn cattle and Shire horse plus grade stock. Summers is selling to move back to his own farm. Watch for the sale date.
I Swain and Sons report strong intake of Duroc hogs with eight Orion gifts bought from Ohio breeders. The herd will be bred with their sows for a sale set February 23, promising an exceptionally fine offering.
Nels Darling argues advertising has transformed households by popularizing canned beans soup vacuum cleaners and washing machines. Advertising, he says, informs readers and persuades purchases, raising living standards while reducing physical labor and preserving health.
Jay N. Summers sold a surplus of Hampshire hogs to a feeder near Trasnor. Forty eight head averaged about 200 pounds, sold at 18 cents per pound. The buyer from Treynor hauled them away, using their feed yard with cattle.
Last Thursday evening the Silver Urn Lodge of Masons in the city conducted third degree work raising A F Cook to Master Mason. Attending were judges and visitors from Glenwood, Silver City, Randolph, Emerson and other lodges with Malvern leading the ceremony. Refreshments followed under John Clayton and assistants. This marks the tenth third degree event this year at the local lodge with officers to be elected tonight.
About seventy listeners attended a piano recital by Mrs. Farnham’s music class at the Wortman home. The program featured works by Haydn Rubinstein Neefe and other composers with pupils including Beattie Hiett McLain Smith Spaulding and Warnham.
A crowd attended a Duroc sale at Malvern Feed Yards last Saturday where W J Wilson and Frank Hillyer sold a large group of reputed swine at strong prices. Auctioneer L A Talbott oversaw bidding with Jack Ames in the ring as hogs drew varied prices and some smaller animals did not sell.
C R Beers resigned as Mills County Telephone Company manager after about a year and was succeeded by V L Eklund of Council Bluffs. Eklund started last week and has begun improving operations. He moved his family from Council Bluffs and is living in the Woodrow tenant house near P G McCord. Beers joined Union Pacific in their signal department with likely headquarters at Cheyenne.
Arrests for drunkenness spiked on the last wet day and dropped on the first dry days. The nine days before prohibition tally 271 arrests, averaging 30.1 daily, versus 31 on average past years.
A firm has set up at the Kearney Kate purchasing walnut logs for government needs. Logs will be cut into timber for gun stocks and airplane propellers. They paid up to Pitty Dollars per thousand in the tree and have bought from D. R. Whitfield, W. J. Summers, Dr. D. M. Kline, Bo J. Duckebil, Gurldoll, Win Lute, B. B. Mleall and others. They continue seeking more as they ship to Chil Meathe. Mon and Wheopey operate a local mill for sawing.
