ISU Advises Specific Soil pH for Crops

ISU field research finds a soil pH of at least 6.5 suits most soils for corn and soybeans and raising pH above 6.5 usually does not reduce yields. For alfalfa a pH of 6.9 is recommended. The Ames ISU soil testing lab measures pH and buffer pH and sets limestone needs by tillage depth. Take samples this fall and apply limestone where needed by next spring.
