Reader letters spar with editor as corn yields lag

Mills Basin readers critique recent essays and address the editor. The Leader welcomes such letters. Farmers are moving corn into elevators with yields lower than early estimates, despite a high local price of $2.11. Popcorn yields drop to about a third of last year’s harvest.

Jurors Named for December Court in Mills County

Mills County district court jurors for the December term were drawn last week and will convene on December 2 at Glenwood with Judge John A. Murray presiding. County Clerk Eva Gay announced the panel including jurors from Malvern, Henderson, Hastings, Silver City, Glenwood, Tabor, Mineola, Janetson and surrounding areas.

Mills County TB Quota Set at 1845 Dollars

Mills County tuberculosis association aims to raise 1845 dollars in the 1947 Christmas Seal Sale to fund education case finding surveys and rehabilitation. Clyde Rhonda, treasurer, notes most funds stay in the county while 95 cents of every dollar supports the National TB Association. Last year the county raised 1845.15 dollars, averaging 12.2 cents per capita.

Malvern Sends Funds for Friendship Train Rally

Malvern Rotary club organized a drive that raised 214.25 for the Friendship Train. The funds were sent to Council Bluffs to purchase wheat for shipment to famine areas in Europe. The train continues to Caset where the food will be loaded for international aid.

Firemen to Hold Annual Frolic Here Dec 11

Malvern Volunteer Fire Dept announces its annual Frolic at the Malvern Community building on December 11. Admission is free. Lee Barron and orchestra provide music. WOW entertainers present a floor show before and during the dance. Proceeds fund fire department development and community projects.

October liquor sales rise in Mills County

Mills County two state liquor stores sold 7 808 14 in October up from 6 730 in September reflecting a 1 100 increase. Malvern store reported 3 926 87 in October and Glenwood 3 881 29.

Malvern Mission Schedules Three Weekly Services

The Mission to southwest Malvern now holds three services weekly. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. and a worship service at 7:80 p.m. Each Sunday. A midweek service is held Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

Ira Allen Accepts Call to Central Park Methodist

The Rev. Ira B. Allen former pastor here now serves at Sidney and has accepted a call to Central Park Methodist Church in St. Paul Minnesota. The 1100 member church runs a community school for under privileged and delinquent children. He will be joined by an assistant pastor a social worker and a teacher for the schools.

First Winter Touch Brings Snow and Cold Outbreak

A thin snowfall touched the area Thursday with more on Friday, covering the ground but not enough to measure. Temperatures plunged to 17 degrees Tuesday morning. November readings remained below normal all week as much colder weather persisted.

Aero Duster Co Formed Last Week

A new service will be offered farmers next spring as the Omaha Aero Dusters Co was formed at the Everett Gipe farm home last Friday evening. Officers named include Bud Larimore president Cliff Sefton vice president Everett Gipe secretary and Kermit Hillyer treasurer. The firm will dust and spray farms by air using a double wing N3N navy plane and plans demonstrations in spring to show efficiency.

In Milla county Iowa a Glenwood conference of mayors county education board and supervisors formed the new county board of review. J R Hall Malvern Henry Washburn Indian Creek township and Frank Wallace Glenwood were named to represent real estate lumber and farming interests. Malvern Board Dismisses Two Teachers At Hearing

Malvern's board of education discharged English teacher Stephen Matheny and history teacher William Moyer after a public hearing attended by nearly 300 students and patrons. The meeting, held during American Education Week, examined salary and contract disputes, with the board asserting it required signed contracts and pay baselines. both teachers were represented by attorneys.

Carl Fritz Returns From Army in Tokyo

Carl H. Fritz, son of Mr and Mrs George Fritz of Malvern, returned Tuesday from eighteen months in Tokyo with a military occupation battalion. He received his discharge before returning home.

Final Rites Here for L M Kline

Funeral services were held at Manafeld Funeral home for Lewis Milton Kline aged 70 years. He was born June 3 1877 in Cedar Rapids Nebraska and died November 5 at Imogene. He married Pearl Willyer on February 20 1899. He leaves a wife two sisters and many relatives. Burial was at Malverga cemetery.

Driver from Omaha Fined 300 for DUI Near Hastings

Harry Peterson of Omaha was fined 300 by Judge Vern Jubueen for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated on Highway 34 north of Hastings. He was found driving a white vehicle under the influence by Hastings area officers Saturday.

Supervisors at Road Study Meet at Atlantic

Mills county's board of supervisors attended a district meeting of boards in Atlantic to study an extensive rural road improvement program. The study covered all county roads with the aim of developing a plan to put every farm on an all weather road.
