Cattle on Feed Report Prompts Mealey Outlook

An ISU extension economist says fed cattle marketings in the next six weeks should be fairly large before a winter drop and rebound. The USDA Oct 1 cattle on feed tally rose 3 percent to 12.1 million, with gains in North Central and Western states and Iowa. He notes heavier weights rising while lighter categories shrink, citing slower feedlot movement and reduced summer placements as factors. Marketings may run above last year into December, with a large potential slaughter due to heavier on feed stocks and abundant feeder cattle for fall and winter placements.

Commodity loan program offered by ASCS to area farmers

Area farmers may use the commodity loan program from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service as a marketing tool this fall. Kenneth G. Miller, county ASCS executive director, says loans are available on corn, beans, wheat, grain sorghum and oats and can aid interim crop income. He notes market prices exceed loan rates but urges awareness of options such as forward contracting futures hedges and partial sales, and invites producers to contact the county ASCS office for details.
