End of the 60th General Assembly Emphasizes Tax Battle

The 60th General Assembly ended May 18 after a long session with mixed results. The big new tax bill was defeated, described as the author’s major achievement, while allied lawmakers known as the Thorns from Southwestern Iowa helped block the package. Despite losses, the balance of power allowed defeating the tax plan without harming other appropriations, and several noteworthy accomplishments were noted. The writer, Mills Fremont and Page counties state senator, plans further public updates via column and radio and offers service during the interim before 1965 session.
