Contour Farming Demands More Labor in Surveys

Iowa State College reports from 197 farms show contour and strip cropping raise horse labor on about one third of farms and terracing adds to labor on over 40 percent. Fuel use generally drops with contour and strip cropping, while terracing yields mixed fuel results and weed control and turning pose major difficulties.

NightHawk misnomer and insect hunter in spring skies

Nighthawks are not true hawks with weak feet and small bills. In late day and early evening they perform aerial maneuvers with long slender wings and emit a shrill peent. One remarkable dive brings them within feet of the ground amid a rushing sound, while their bill and body contrast with daytime birds.

Iowa Paragraphs and Local Oddities Across Towns

A collage of small town notes from Iowa mentions Wayne and Glen Smith visiting Honolulu from Lake City, and civic oddities in Parkerburg with a disputed mayoral resignation. Legal actions include Mrs. Florence Ponsar seeking protection from her husband, and a temporary injunction in Waterloo. A Corydon resident narrowly escapes danger when a fire erupts, while a Grinnell group returns a highway sign and pays a fine. Other items note a hospital fund, a unique arthritic case in Oskaloosa, and various lighthearted anecdotes about Gone With the Wind screenings and local wildlife discoveries.
