Bonus blanks filled by servicemen across Iowa counties
County Auditor Homer Mitchell received 2,000 Iowa service men bonus blanks last Friday. He had placed about 1,000 around the county with banks and American Legion service officers. Applicants may obtain blanks at convenient locations and mail them to the World War II Service Compensation Board in Des Moines. Initial payments are expected in June, though payment method litigation creates uncertainty. The plan, approved at the last general election, provides from 40 to 500 dollars with a 90 million dollar bond financed by a property tax. Mills county taxes will rise about 42,834.48 this year. Eligibility requires Iowa residence six months before service, service between Sept 16, 1940 and Sept 2, 1945 with 120 days before Dec 31, 1946. Applications due by Dec 30, 1950. Mitchell noted a heavy but variable application rate. Malvern officer Costello reported 30 applications on the first day and only a few since, as of Wednesday.
