Garden planting tips from Iowa State College extension
Unusually cloudy wet April slows garden season. Protect seeds with disinfectants like Spergon or Arasan and disinfect May plantings. Plant early cabbage broccoli when soil dries, with successive beets carrots kohlrabi lettuce and radishes until May 15. Continue beet and carrot through June or early July for storage. Plant warm vegetables in mid May after a balmy spell. Begin snap and pole beans in early May. wait until mid May for soybeans, lima beans, cucumbers, melons peppers squash tomatoes and sweet corn. Use proper holes, don’t tamp soil. Feed each plant with Victory Garden fertilizer solution at planting. Plant earliest sweet corn varieties first. add phosphate, avoid corn cross with other corn. Seed should be treated and planted in medium heavy soil. thin crowded rows.
