Property tax relief vs sales tax in House debate
In the House this week the Ways and Means Committee battled over a sales tax. Southwest Iowa reps fight to prevent the bill from floor debate, arguing that true property tax relief requires new money. They note that even full sales tax revenue back to counties as state aid would cut property tax by only 7 mills, or 3–4 mills if schools kept part for higher salaries. Both parties seek medical aid to the needy, university funding, and broader school aid, each with impact on farmers and property taxes. The discussion ends with asking readers for their views.
